SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS
Our Matchmaking with AI paper received the CSCW24 Best Paper Honorable Mention award.
️ I was honored to participate in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) event on Open by Design: Participatory Algorithm for Equity and Inclusion and give a keynote at the MIDAS Ethical AI symposium at the University of Michigan.
We organized a workshop on Human-AI Alignment: Developing a Research Agenda by Bridging Interdisciplinary Approaches at the TAS conference!
Our PhD student, Angie Zhang, ran a co-design workshop as part of the worker training on AI, which was organized by International Labour Organization.
I am an assistant professor in the UT Austin School of Information, and a director of the Human-AI Interaction Lab. I am also core faculty of the campus-wide Ethical AI Program, and affiliated with Machine Learning Lab, Good Systems, and Texas Robotics. Our work is possible thanks to the National Science Foundation, Good Systems, and Swedish Research Council.

I am a human-computer interaction researcher who combines computer science, design, and social science theories and methods. I conducted some of the first studies that empiricially examine the AI's social implications on work, management, and governance. I coined the term Algorithmic Management, and proposed the Procedural Justice Framework for AI to address the misalignment between AI assumptions and stakeholder priorities.

My vision is that Participatory AI, which enables stakeholder participation across the AI development cycle, can better align AI with stakeholde priorities and contribute to creating just, empowering workplaces and cities.

I strive to translate my research into pragmatic systems and processes to make the real-world impact or support organizations that promote equity and social good. Our WeBuildAI participatory algorithm is adopted by Food Rescue Hero; we are conducting research to assist public administration using technology. Some of our current partners include Austin Transportation Department, King County, Washington, Food Rescue Hero, and Dilligent Robotics.

I conduct research in the three complementary research threads:

Psychological Understandings of AI
We seek to gain novel understandings of human perception and trust, human decision-makers’ biases, and social practices around AI and algorithmic decisions.

Human Perspectives on AI Fairness & Equity
Human perceptions of fairness in algorithmic decisions for resource allocation, healthcare, and managerial decisions such as AI-based hiring. 📖  Related papers: Perceptions of Algorithmic Decisions, Procedural Justice Framework for AI, Algorithmic Mediation & Fair Division Algorithm

Work Practices around AI
Perceptions and work practices around algorithmic management in gig work, human resource management, and physician-patient relationships. 📖  Related papers: Working with Machines, Perceptions of Algorithmic Decisions

Participatory Systems for Human-Centered AI
We develop participatory methods and systems to empower workers and citizens to design AI systems for well-being, fairness and equity.

WeBuildAI
WeBuildAI framework that enables stakeholders to build algorithmic models for their own communities, such as a donation matching algorithm that adjudicates tradeoffs between equity and efficiency. 📖  Related paper: WeBuildAI

Participatory AI Governance & Management
Ongoing work on algorithmic shift scheduling, AI-assisted hiring, gig work, and public resource allocation in city food infrastructure. 📖  Related paper: Worker Well-Being Model for Algorithmic Management

Data Science and AI Explainability
We explore data science and AI explainability to design decision-support tools for enhanced human decision-making.

Decision-Support Tool
Ongoing work on public assistance for people experiencing homelessness, AI-assisted hiring, and strategies to tackle misinformation on social media. 📖  Related papers: Procedural Justice Framework for AI, Dynamic Resource Allocation for Community Service, Fair Smart Community Service

My past projects investigated human-robot interaction.
